Grabbed from the uproariously funny Drama Queen |
There is no doubt that dramaland is my sweet escape whenever I am physically, mentally and emotionally worn out joggling life's activities in the real world. It serves as my personal paradise where I can forget facing tough realities and indulge myself munching fluffy fantasies. An hour dose of an emotionally engaging Asian drama can instantly pick me up no matter how terrible my day turns out. It may be exaggerated but at this point of my life, I can say that I can no longer live without this guiltless obsession. Just like breathing, watching Asian dramas is already a part of my body system that I have to do in order to survive this boring
Thank you Drama Queen for being so wildly witty! |
(FRIENDLY REMINDER : Okay, you can freely roll your eyes on me if you don't agree with my ratings and opinions but just remember that we all have different taste and filters so the series may be enticing to you but not to me or the other way around. To each their own.)
-> Because there's a huge difference between entertainment and quality, I decided to apply the sophisticated rating system from the ultimate bible of English-speaking drama fangirls and bloggers, Dramabeans (Note : There are dramas that I enjoy blindly, even if the story is far from the awesome line.) I've included two ratings on a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best), the first number shows "how much I enjoy" the drama and the second one presents "how good I think it is" objectively speaking.

I filled up my emotional bag with heartwarming moments and deeply enjoyed a worthwhile 49-day journey charged with hope only to find out that the destination wasn't worth it. Platonic love veers in romantic territory, let's be real, you don't get to live in the same roof with your handsome guy best friend and feel nothing in the process. The daily adventure might be lightweight but the main pair's pleasing chemistry makes it a joyful and meaningful base-to-base run all through out.

- Three hours in and you have a murky, bloody, sharply-written drama that butchers your screen with gruesome fight scenes, lead by a kick-ass heroine who's rockin' every weapon she touches. If gore and combat are up your alley, it's the perfect drama for you but make sure you're old enough for its adult content. The tinge of romance makes me ask for more.

- Warning : Make sure you're stomach is not empty before you hit play. This is by far one of the most worry-free dramas I've ever seen. Everything is so easy to digest. There is nothing notable about its plot and the series of murder don't make any sense at all but the allure of food porn is exquisitely mouth-watering, it literally makes me hungry.

- It brought me to heaven of happiness then dragged me to hell of boredom. What can possibly go wrong when a drama tapped a dazzlingly beautiful couple, laugh-inducing contract marriage and blazing hot sexual tension? Nothing, right? But unfortunately, recycled conflicts, weak second fiddles and predictably dry ending fizzled the initial magic that reeled me in.

- A heavy-handed drama redux of the movie, The Classic. It was visually breathtaking yet incredibly boring. The multi-generation love stories bored me to tears because it was so formulaic, I simply knew how everything will unfold. Props to the production's delicate touch to details but boo to the writer's failure to draw a glorious, heart-sweeping romance.

There was nothing unusual about it's poor-hardworking-girl-gets-torn-between-two-rich-guys-story but the undeniable chemistry of the leads which were sweethearts together successfully made this on the top. - No homerun for this Baker King version 2.0. It's okay to dress up as hardcore makjang but at least don it with style. The lackluster plot-devices and empty spark between the leads bogged down the story. Why did they have to turn the baseball angst to absurd office competition? - Flawed but well-balanced. An aimless gangster finds purpose in his life when he discovers he has a dying daughter who needs his bone marrow to live, but things get more complicated when he gets framed up for a crime he didn't commit and becomes a fugitive on the run. The two-weeks-worth of cat and mouse chase is pure adrenaline rush and all the father-daughter interactions deliver a ray of warm, fuzzy feels.

Release : March-May, 2006 (MAIN LEADS : HA JI WON, JO IN SUNG & SO JI SUB)
- Love triangle at its craziest because even the female lead herself isn't sure who she really loves. The twisted love affair of the scandalous foursome toyed with my emotions. Dark, tense and deeply effective. This is the series that I love to hate but I can't because the leads are spectacular.

- Perfect musical-romance-college drama. Period. Call me biased but this show sucked me in with no way out. Atmospheric, whimsical and gorgeously filmed. Striking back stories, wonderful characters and enjoyable performances made this a winner in my eyes. Kim Ji Won's quirky Tae Hee was a personal favorite.

- To be honest, I don't enjoy older-woman-younger-man-relationship as much as I enjoy older-man-younger-woman-set-up but this drama pulled me out of my preference. I love the adult humor, the couple, the sweetness and of course, Chun Jung Myung.

Jan-Feb.2012 (MAIN LEADS : LEE DONG WOOK & LEE SHI YOUNG)
- Cocky baseball hero hires an anti-fan as a bodyguard. Seriously, it has more wild conflicts than romantic set-ups. Bipolar ex-girlfriend, moronic stalking and weak plot instruments are the three strikes that make this drama out of the awesome line. The bizarre romance of Mr. Robot and Ms. Porn Addict totally eclipses the central romance.

Episodes : 16 / Network : SBS (Dec.2009-Jan.2010)
Rating : 7/7 (MAIN LEADS : GO SOO & HAN YE SEUL)
- How can a first episode be the best of all episodes? The strong start with the young versions of Go Soo and Han Ye Seul is amusing and gushing. Most of the parts are sentimental and moving but later on, the series gets too upsetting to keep on.

- This drama is both the queen and king of Korean drama tragedy ; amnesia, incest, swapped-identities, fatal illness and truck-load of crying, name it! Watching this is the same as having a sob-fest! Tissues are not enough so use towels instead.

Rating : 7/5 (MAIN LEADS : CHOI JUNG WON & KIM JI HOON)
- It's good but not memorable. Plot-wise, it has a lot of flaws but there's enough romance to hold the attention of viewers. The kids are adorable, the heroine is charming but others characters lack substance.
Title : WITCH YOO HEE
Genre : Romance, Comedy
Episodes : 16 / Network :SBS (March-May,2007)

- Weak plot, loose writing and plain complications ; It's an un-challenging watch for me. I don't like this but I don't hate it as well, somewhere in the middle. Jae Hee is cute, Kim Jeong Hoon is good-looking and Han Ga In is pretty but that's all I can remember in the end.

- No one will argue on me that the main pair here is one of the best-looking couples in K-dramaland. Too bad the story line is not as beautiful as the leads are. But I pick-up some facts inside the world of drama production which are quite interesting.

- Sixteen hours of an absolutely guiltless marathon. Never a dull moment. I can't believe the giddy and silly cross-dressing story of a nun-in-training turned boy-band member can be my instant pick-me-up. I laughed so hard, I almost peed my pants. Speedy pace, adorable characters and ear-sticking songs. I'll be an A.N.JELL fan forever and ever!

- Sadly, I didn't fall for it. I guess giving my You're Beautiful alterna-couple a drama of their own is not a good idea if the plot is lacking on so many levels. The main couple was cute, don't get me wrong but their campus romance made me cringe and the musical competition frustrated me. It was a musical-oriented youth drama that had no energy, passion and rhythm. Thank you Kang Min Hyuk for making me smile though.

- A heiress in a big company hired a girl who identically looks like her to pretend to be her when her face got damaged and changed because of an accident planned by her own boyfriend. Story is tight, cast are wonderful and romance is engrossing.

- A tale of two immortal lovers that fight for their love against all odds. Aside from the romance, different kinds and degrees of love are also shown. The plot is well-written and the musical score is memorable. I love the male leads the most!

- What the mind forgets, the heart remembers. It is the same-old and familiar amnesia catastrophe but the heart-melting scenarios and well-acted cast make the drama fresh and intense. Plus the adorable child actor adds charm to the upbringing of the show.

- A naughty, luxurious and playboy cop meets a serious, short-tempered and tough police. It rocks the action but sucks in romance. The police cases are great but the love line is so confusing and complicated.

Rating : 7/6
- There's more story than the "poor-boy-meets-rich-girl" premise. I had the interest about this solely because I badly miss Barbie Xu due to my post-Meteor Garden obsession and I can't believe that this will introduce me to another must-watch talented actor named Show Luo.
Genre : Romance, Comedy

- I am not a huge fan of bad boys but Mike He breathed life to his devilish role in an irresistible way that I can't possibly say no to him. Love is sure twisted especially if the object of your attraction turns out to be your new step-sibling out of your parent's new marriage.
Title : DOWN WITH LOVE
Genre : Romance, Comedy
Episodes : 16 / Network : CTV (Jan.-May 2010)
Rating : 6/4
- The recycled and draggy conflicts of the story in the later part ruined the exciting chemistry of the main couple. The first half of the drama is positively farcical but the writer's intention to elongate the series resulted to lack of creativeness that made the show a flop.
Genre : Romance, Comedy
Episodes : 24 / Network : SETTV (March-Aug. 2008)

- No matter how slapstick the comedy turned out and no matter how ridiculously repetitive the couple played tug-of-war, this love story still deserved the title of 2008 Best Taiwanese Drama. The record-breaking rating of this show proves that it's popcorn worth to watch.
- This is a certified drama crack of mine! The funny antics of the wacky pair delivers the jokey story a side-splitting entertainment. In this rom-com, Rainie Yang is at her best appearance, Show Lo re-defines himself in my actor dictionary and Pink Panther steals the show.
- Thanks to this show, I got to know my favorite Janine Chang, got a glimpse of my Joe Cheng and got to see Eddie Peng for the first time. This live-action adaptation of the manga with the same title is the one nearest in my heart among the other versions.
- Add burning basketball action with sizzling hot players to get a combustible screen. I don't really care about the romance of the story because I don't have any will to share three handsome guys with anyone. This is good, though sometimes the court stunts went over-board
- A passive but romantic hero who secretly loves his dominant and opinionated best friend for 15 years : This is the most realistic, natural and sincere series I've ever watched in my entire Asian drama viewing that owns me wholeheartedly. It delivers the best finale ever!
- Love and hate are the two sides of this show. I gave my heart in this because it reunited my favorite Taiwanese pair but the show ripped it into pieces when they molded and turned Joe Cheng into a frivolous, lazy and broke Cai Jin Lai. To hell with the irritating story here!
- No other Asian series can compare the depth of emotion I invested for this drama. If only watching this would make one earns money then probably, I am now a millionaire for the countless times I've watched this show. First love never dies and so does my eternal love for Meteor Garden.
- I cursed and buried the word "amnesia" in my vocabulary because of this sequel. Why did they drag this memory loss tragedy for so long that it became a wound that kept on getting deeper every episode. But still, my ardent love for this show fought real hard and won in the end.
- A bubbly fashion murderer meets a stern fashion police. The make-over deal of the two is the biggest and silliest challenge of the show. Watching the over-the-top-comedy brings some fun slack entertainment, though I don't find any visible flying spark between the main pair.
- Though this drama lacks one character's voice, the story shouts a resounding romance that brings nostalgia in your screen. The poignant memories of this heart-splitting series still linger in my head. It makes sign language so sweet and moving that you'll be inspired to learn it.

- If a fatally-flawed drama like this presses the doorbell of your house, don't open even your window. The outrageous plot murdered the lively chemistry of the main couple. Randomness all over the story, it seemed like the writer was drunk when she wrote the script for this.

DeleteHello! Thank you for visiting my blog! I'm glad you enjoy your stay. Hihi :) Actually, I haven't finished THE PRINCESS MAN and I'm still at episode 8. But so far, the story is gripping and the acting is well-executed. I'll add this in my drama list once I finish it this week. If you haven't checked it out, try it! It's a brilliant sageuk drama you shouldn't miss.

Thank you! Glad to know that we have the same interest ^^ I also love HI MY SWEETHEART :) It made a SHOW LUO FAN out of me.
Deletehi, i don't know where to post this =) but i would just like to ask if you already know that lee seung-gi and ha ji won will be having a new drama this 2012. =) i know that u have a crush on lee seung gi. =)
ReplyDeleteYeah! I'm aware and updated about it! Thank you for remembering me. I really appreciate that! :D Mwuah! Hihi :) I AM SOOO EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEWS!!! Let's support it!
Deletei haven't watched any taiwanese dramas but i've watched most of the kdramas you have and i have to say i totally agree with all your reviews :D
ReplyDeletei didn't watch famous princesses yet but i was planning on watching it because i have a huuuuuge crush on lee seung gi so i'm glad to know the drama wasn't bad :)
Thank you for spending time reading my mini-reviews about dramas. You should try some of the Taiwanese dramas on my list. Start with IN TIME WITH YOU! It's beyond awesome! :D
DeleteAbout the Famous Princesses, I found myself patient! Hihi! Imagine, it's 80 episodes and that's equivalent to 80 hours! Whew! But it's entertaining. Aside from MY LEE SEUNG GI, the other characters are endearing too. ^
Hi purplelee, I really like your reviews about asian dramas. :)) Looking forward to your reviews about jdramas :)) I'm addicted to asian dramas too.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear! I'm so happy that you like my reviews. I'm planning to include my Japanese list this week. ^^
DeleteSo excited with your list :)) yehey! happy :))
DeleteI am just curious, did u finished watching i love you don't cry with 132 episodes? it has so many episodes :)) I also wanted to watch new tales of gisaeng :) I have read from your post that it is a good drama. :))
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! Unfortunately, I had no choice but to finish this stressful drama. My aunt loved it and she wanted me to accompany her while watching it on the internet. Well, the first half of I LOVE YOU, DON'T CRY was interesting! I especially love Lee Jung Jin but later on, the plot went too draggy and angsty.
DeleteActually, an episode is equivalent to 35 minutes only. It's a weekday family drama, from Monday-Friday, so it's five times a week. It's not like those twice-a-week dramas that have 1 hour and 6 minute airtime.
On the other note, YOU SHOULD REALLY WATCH NEW TALES OF GISAENG! My Gosh, I LOVE THIS DRAMA SO MUCH!!! The leads are newbie actors that's why it didn't have that much popularity from fans but trust me! Watch this and you'll thank me later. First episode looks boring but hang on! It took me 5 episodes before I confirmed that this was a gem. Plus the main actor is soooooo HOT! LOL :D
thank u for that information :)) At first, I thought it was one hour each episodes. :) I'm just curious that's why I ask you. :))
DeleteI'm so excited to watch it already! :)) Maybe during my summer break, I'll watch it. Thank u for your recommendation :)) It's nice to talk to you even if it is just about on dramas :)) I really like your reviews. Before, I also wanted to make one, but I don't have the time and I'm not good at writing. I'm glad to have come across your site. I always visit this site. :)
Oh by the way, if you don't mind, what's your name and where are you from? ^^
DeletePeople call me chandz :)) I'm from the Philippines your home country. :)) I'm also the one who posted a message about lee seung-gi and ha ji won's upcoming drama and the one who is looking forward to your jdrama list :))
DeleteOh! I see . . . Yes! A "kababayan" :)Hehe :D By the way, My real name is Joanna, I'm 19 years old. How about you?
DeleteHi joanna, nice meeting you. :)) 19 years old too, turning 20 this year :))
DeleteOh, really? That's cool! We are in the same age. I'm also turning 20 this year. Do you live in province or in the city?
Deletesorry, i posted on the wrong area. Instead of replying it here, I posted a new one. :))
DeletePeople call me Chandz :)) Im from the Philippines, your home country. :)) I'm also the one who posted a message about lee seug-gi and ha ji won's upcoming drama and the one who's looking forward to your jdrama list. :))
ReplyDeleteIn the city :)) We also studied in the same school. UST :))
ReplyDeleteWow! Same interest, same age and now same school! I feel like I know you even if we haven't even met :) LOL! By the way, how did you know that I studied in UST? What's your course?
DeleteBS psychology, how about you? :)) I read it before here in your blog. :)
DeleteI wanted to be a teacher so I took BSE in UST. By the way, can we be friends on facebook? If you don't mind. ^^
DeleteI added you already :)) Nice to be friends with you.
DeleteDo you have a to be watched list of asian dramas? :)) I suddenly thought of asking you. :) I'm just curious because mine is too long already. I'm just finding the time to watch all of it, busy with acads. You have plenty of currently watching dramas :)) and there's so many upcoming dramas that seems nice. *excited* :)
DeleteI just discovered that I can select a name instead of anonymous :)) sorry to flood your comment box with our conversation. :)
DeleteDon't worry Chandz. I don't mind at all. In fact, I'm having fun exchanging messages with you. By the way, thank you for adding me! We're friends on FB already.
Deletehi :) Have you watched dong yi and hong gil dong? :))
ReplyDeleteHello ^^ I've watched two episodes of DONG YI before but I haven't picked it until now. In regards to HONG GIL DONG, I haven't seen it. I'm not sure if I should watch it or not. Should I? :)
DeleteI'm not sure if you will like it. but for me it's nice, one of the Hong sister's dramas :)) kang ji hwan and sung yuri. Currently I'm on episode 22 :) I chatted you again. hahaha. I asked this because I read your post about feasts of the gods :) Can I asked something, what course did you take in your school there in US? Is it the same in the Phil, Monday to Friday classes? I'm just curious because you are watching many currently airing dramas :)
Deletewhen I read your comment about the Korean version (Playful Kiss)honestly I disagree with it. hahaah though I haven't watched that series, Bias but i Agree the crown is still with the Taiwan version ( It started with a kiss )Nothing and No one can beat the acting of Ariel Lin and Joe cheng! it was so remarkable, Indeed they did both an excellent job compare to the korean version leading characters. :D
ReplyDeleteHi! Yeah, you're right! (Taiwanese) IT STARTED WITH A KISS is still the best version! I only said that Korean PLAYFUL KISS is the most impressive visually because they managed to improve the wardrobe and settings of this drama. I've also watched the Japanese version and it sucked! Hihi :D :D :D You should try the Korean version and see how it goes.
DeleteHello HYPEDUPHINA ^_^
Delete- I'm about to reply to your comment but because of too much excitement, I accidentally removed it. Huhu . . Sorry dear, I didn't mean to delete your wonderful comment.
By the way, I would like to thank you for visiting my blog and for recommending my "Asian Drama Reviews" to your friends. Aww. You don't know how happy I am right now. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! You truly made my day! =) If you have questions or anything, just ask me and I'll be here to answer you! ^^ Have a great day!
Lol that is all right XD haha! As long as you read it first =] I'm just really happy you have this blog because I honestly was soo lost when it came to selecting dramas since there are so many. I didn't even know half of them until I came here. You really have a lot of time on your hands haha. I wish I could watch as many as you can. My college schedule only allows me to watch one at a time, but this month I am daring to start 2 at the same time lol.
DeleteQuick question, have you heard of the K Drama 'Padam Padam'? The one with Kim Bum? I have yet to see it, but my friend has seen it and she at first wanted me to see it, but then at then end she didn't [she got emotional about it and won't tell me what happened lol] I was just wondering if it was one you were going to view/review or not?
Before anything else, I want to say "thank you" again. Hihi . . For bloggers like me, a single comment really means a lot. Because it just shows that there are people who actually bother to read what I write in this colorful corner of mine. I'm really an appreciative person so simple things like this can ultimately brightens up my day. ^^
DeleteActually , I'm a busy bee! You know what, even I myself, wonder how I manage to juggle a lot of things. Not only am I watching dramas, movies, variety shows and animes but I'm also busy reading novels and mangas. Hehe! MY SECRET? Multi-tasking and sacrificing my social life. Haha :D Well, I should blame this obsession of mine on my non-existent love life. I'm an official member of N.B.S.B (No Boyfriend Since Birth) Club, so all of my free time belongs only to me and with my current lifestyle, I'm pretty sure that I won't have a boyfriend that will hinder my drama viewing in near future. I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT! Hihi ^^
I'm only 19 and I'm still a student just like you. I just got hired in a full-time job so my current life gets crazier nowadays. To keep up with my dramas, I'm doing two things one at a time. Watching while eating, watching while waiting, watching while exercising, watching while doing my business in the restroom (Yeah! You read that right! :D), watching while cleaning, watching between breaks, etc. It's crazy, isn't? Oops, I forgot to include this : SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! I'm very much willing to give up my slumber time just to marathon a drama. Dark circles under my eyes just keep on piling everyday. Haha!
About your question, I've read a lot of good reviews about Padam Padam but I haven't seen it yet. My friends in dramaland used to rave about this series while it was airing before. According to them, it's not your typical k-drama story. It doesn't only revolve around the hero's love tale but it also tackles issues about humanity and life. I'm planning to give this drama a shot after I finish the dramas on my watch-list. Actually, I'm going to make a post this week about the Asian dramas I'm going to watch next so maybe you could check it out to see if there's a series that could catch your attention. ^^
Woohoo! I didn't notice I already wrote a lengthy reply. =)
Lol! Sorry it took forever to write back to you! I actually read this a while ago, but never had the time to reply ^_^ But now I do! The semester is almost over so I finally had a break to do some things I haven't been able to do n a while. I couldn't even watch Kdramas for a couple weeks...it killed me on the inside lol. Anyways, thanks for replying! I enjoyed reading what you wrote lol. You really do know how to multitask!!! XD I kind of fail at multitasking haha. I can only do one thing at a time or else I get frustrated.
DeleteWell, I just finished watching Secret Garden this morning and I was very pleased with it!! Very good drama! Padam Padam is somewhere on my watch next list lol. I saw a preview for it and it looks pretty interesting. I like that it is different =P I need a break from the same story lines ya know? lol. I will check out your watch next list and see if there is something on there for me ^_^ lol.
Oh quick random story I felt like sharing with you, so this past weekend was the Korean Music Festival in LA and I got to go! I was soooo happy! Finally saw my loves MBLAQ live! And I won a free album at the A+ fan meet before the concert began! I also was finally able to go to Korea town and hit up the plaza there! Everyone was so nice! I got many free kpop items with my album purchases. It was amazing. <3 I wish I could go back! lol Just felt like sharing my happiness!
Oh, and you're 19 too? I am actually going to be turning 20 on Tuesday @_@ I still feel like a child though lol. I will forever be a child at heart! XD Sigh...I'm getting old...lol. Oh! Sorry for the long reply haha XD

ReplyDeleteHi. Thanks for dropping by =) I've seen They Kiss Again already and I loved it! Actually, I'm not yet done with my Taiwanese corner. As you can see, I got stuck at letter "S".. Hopefully, if I get more time this week, I'll work on this list. Even my Japanese dramas are not yet included here.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the great reviews! I have gone through so many websites looking for a good source to guide me through dramaland, but none are as good as yours. Although they're short and spoiler-free your reviews gave me a good idea about what to watch (and what kind of ending to expect, I'm immensely depressed and in no mood for a tear-fest right now!).. so yeah, would sure come here often for updates! Keep them coming please & happy watching ^.^
ReplyDeleteCyber-hugss <3
